Lyu Namgwon's First Spanish Solo Exhibition Reimagines Korean Lacquer at Korean Cultural Center

From September 17 to November 13, 2026, the Korean Cultural Center in Spain will present 'Gicheok, Una Corriente Silenciosa,' marking the first solo exhibition in the country by Korean artist Lyu Namgwon. This showcase reimagines ottchil, a traditional lacquer technique from Korea. The term 'Gicheok' refers to subtle indicators of existence, highlighting the artist's investigation into unseen influences. Lyu's work involves layering lacquer to produce unexpected textures, celebrating imperfections. The exhibition includes ten pieces, such as 'Column in Black' (2026) and two works from the 'Stroke' series (2023). It also features collaborations with designer Shim Seungyeon and Studio Hinge. Lyu, who won the 'Young Artisan' award in 2022, is trained in Oriental Painting and Furniture Design. Curated by Baik Seungyee and supported by the Pureun Cultural Foundation, the exhibition opens on September 17 with free entry.
