Lydia Ourahmane's Braille Score for Visually Impaired Singers at Galeria Municipal do Porto

exhibition · 2026-09-09

At the Galeria Municipal do Porto, Lydia Ourahmane showcases 'For Voice,' a collaborative work with her sister, Sarah Ourahmane, who is a composer and musician. This composition, designed for two visually impaired female vocalists, is subtly integrated into the gallery walls as a tactile Braille score. The piece's design is entirely influenced by the gallery's architecture. During the performance, the singers navigate the triangular space, following the Braille score along the walls. Utilizing Braille musical notation, the score conveys pitch, rhythm, key, and octave through a continuous line of notes and instructions. After the live performance, a kinetic audio system on a linear rail plays a recording through two speakers, mimicking the singers' movements in the darkened gallery. The exhibition booklet can be found on the gallery's website.
