Luna Mahoux's First Spanish Solo Show Opens at Cordova, Barcelona

Belgian-Ethiopian artist Luna Mahoux presents her first solo exhibition in Spain, 'Where Would I Be?', at Cordova, an independent space in Barcelona dedicated to site-specific projects. The show runs until September 5 and features photography, film, and appropriated images sourced from digital platforms like YouTube, movies, and TV series. Mahoux uses screenshots that she crops, enlarges, prints, and reorganizes to create new meanings. The installation includes references to Afro-American popular culture, Ethiopian religious traditions, and internet visual languages. A key element is a photograph taken by the artist during a recent trip to Ethiopia, depicting a young man releasing a dove, visible from the street through Cordova's window. The subject is blurred for anonymity and is the cousin of musician Adrasha, whom Mahoux met in Ethiopia and who performed at the opening. In the central space, three large-format photographs are partially hidden behind translucent curtains inspired by Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church traditions. Two of these images are from the series 'The Wire' by David Simon. The exhibition concludes with a print on carpet covering the floor of the last room, showing a still from a 2026 video by rapper Kodak Black, and a suspended work based on Jim Jarmusch's 1999 film 'Ghost Dog'. Mahoux, born in 1996, combines cinema, photography, and installation to explore Afro-diasporic narratives often absent from official discourse.
