Lucía Dorta Abad's 'Alter Ego (1986)' Explores Invisible Geographies

Lucía Dorta Abad's video 'Alter Ego (1986)' uses a drone to follow her sister through the rural landscape of Isla Baja, Tenerife, questioning how official cartography and surveillance fail to capture the affective and gendered memories embedded in territory. The work is part of 'Outside Lineage', a series of twelve videos curated by Dorta Abad that resist linear temporality and hegemonic narratives. The series draws on concepts from Ailton Krenak, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, and Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui to address neo-imperialism and the imposition of a single time. Dorta Abad (b. 1998, Los Silos) holds a BFA from the University of La Laguna and has coordinated public programmes at TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, including 'Rethinking from the Edge' (2021–2023) and 'Onda Corta' (2022–2023). She co-curated 'Paisajes del intersticio' (2023) with Carla Marzán and was awarded a curatorial research residency at Matadero Madrid for 2026. Since 2023, she has collaborated with Abraham Riverón on the Visual Arts Section of Ateneo de La Laguna.
