Lorna Bauer Reclaims E-1027's Memory at Trotter&Sholer

Canadian artist Lorna Bauer's exhibition "Maison en Bord de Mer" at Trotter&Sholer gallery in New York reclaims the narrative of E-1027, the modernist villa designed by Eileen Gray on the French Riviera. The show, running through August 8, features kiln-formed glass sculptures and photographs from Bauer's 2017 visit to the house. E-1027 was built by Gray with input from Jean Badovici, but later vandalized by Le Corbusier's murals, which Gray condemned in 1952. Le Corbusier failed to buy the house, built cabins next door in 1952, and died swimming there in 1965. The French government has since renovated E-1027. Bauer's works include hand-mirroring using expired Polaroid 55 film, developed with Ansel Adams' help, and references to the house's design like the phonograph in Music Corner and glass citrus in Lemon Tree. The exhibition explores memory's fallibility, with shifting reflections in pieces like Palms and Fenêtre Paravent.
