London Museum relocates to Smithfield Market by Stanton Williams and Asif Khan

Images and renderings of the new London Museum in Smithfield, crafted by Stanton Williams, Asif Khan, and Julian Harrap Architects, have been unveiled ahead of its anticipated launch later this year. This museum will take the place of the current Museum of London, which is scheduled for demolition following the dismissal of a legal challenge. Situated in the historic Smithfield general market, it retains Victorian pillars and beams while offering open-plan spaces for exhibitions and social gatherings. The layout consists of three linked areas: Real Time (entry through a covered former street), Our Time (the main area in Linbury Hall featuring 13 large displays of contemporary London culture), and Past Time (permanent underground galleries detailing history from prehistoric times to the Blitz and London Olympics, including a six-meter viewing window onto Thameslink trains). Renovations revealed an extensive 800-square-meter network of underground vaults and heritage shopfronts. The museum aspires to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding sustainability rating, placing it in the top one percent of global buildings. It is set to open on November 28.
