Loewe Spring/Summer 2027: McCollough and Hernandez Blend Spanish Baroque with American Sportswear
For their third Loewe collection, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez presented Spring/Summer 2027 with the theme 'new world, old world.' The set was a Kubrickian reimagining of an ancient amphitheatre, with models circling. The designers merged European old world with American ease, drawing on Spanish baroque paintings by Zurbarán and Velázquez seen at the Prado. American sportswear clashed with Spanish drapery: crumpled paper-bag skirts tied with bungee cords, Velázquez drapes swagged across skirts, pinched shoulders on leather jackets, and twisted sweatshirts. The collection featured prep checked blazers, polo shirts, pyjama bottoms, and chinos, evoking Tina Barney, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Bruce Weber. McCollough and Hernandez aimed to move away from surreal twists and art references, stating they no longer wanted to create clothes as objects. The Puzzle bag was reconfigured to slouch, a new style had a drawstring flap, and moulded leather was loosened into short dresses. A golden tan suede blazer nodded to Loewe's first clothing item from the 1960s. Clothes appeared in heat, sliding and peeling, with a sweatshirt draped on a bare torso and zippers opening. The collection conveyed easy sexuality, like Ivy League students backpacking across Europe. In a season of sly seduction, their take on sex was among the most compelling.
