Loader Monteith rebuilds ruined Highlands house with blackened-larch extension

Scottish studio Loader Monteith has transformed a derelict farmhouse beside the River Dulnain near Inverness, Scotland, into a three-bedroom family home named Dulnain. Around 90 percent of the original granite was salvaged, retooled, and reused to reconstruct the stone cottage, which now contains bedrooms and a family bathroom. A blackened-larch extension, referencing traditional Highland agricultural buildings, houses the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. A glazed circulation space connects the two distinct wings. Project architect Jamie Mack stated the design expresses the relationship between old and new, with each element retaining its own identity. The home is raised on a plinth to mitigate flood risk on an active floodplain. Living spaces are oriented north toward Dava Moor, with large sliding glass doors opening onto a patio. Interior finishes include oak flooring, pale timber joinery, neutral porcelain tiles, and a muted blue kitchen. Energy features include an air-source heat pump, triple glazing, and high insulation. Founded in 2016 by Graham Loader and Stuart Monteith, the practice is known for blending contemporary architecture with historic settings.
