Liu Wei Debuts Met Facade Commission Speculation, His First New York Solo Work in a Decade

exhibition · 2026-08-13

Liu Wei, an artist from Beijing, has introduced his work Speculation (2026) as part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Genesis Facade Commission, marking his first return to New York in a decade. This installation, displayed until June 7, 2027, showcases four sculptures at the museum's entrance, crafted from metal and fiberglass composites that draw on archaeological and architectural themes. The massive hands depicted suggest distorted mudras, emphasizing humanity's creative influence. The left sculpture incorporates stitched bovine rawhide, while the right takes on the appearance of an ornamental mantle. Curator Lesley Ma highlighted Liu's exploration of culture's transformative nature. This piece is the seventh in the Met facade series, following contributions from artists like Jeffrey Gibson and Wangechi Mutu.
