Linder's first permanent public artwork is a 53-foot snake mosaic at London Zoo

artist · 2026-07-02

Artist Linder has unveiled her first permanent public artwork and first-ever mosaic, a 53-foot (16m) snake mosaic titled 'Sirona' at ZSL London Zoo, marking the conservation charity's 200th anniversary. The work honors pioneering zoologist Joan Beauchamp Procter, the Zoo's first female Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians, known as the 'Dragon Doctor' for walking Komodo dragons on a lead. Procter revolutionized reptile care and exhibition design, recognizing the need for ultraviolet light decades before standard practice, and designed the original Reptile House. She presented her first scientific paper to ZSL at 19 and became curator at 26, dying at 34. The mosaic, made from reclaimed marble tesserae and Black Galaxy granite, features an Ethiopian mountain adder, an endangered EDGE species. It includes the phrase 'Think of this sometimes' in Procter's handwriting from a letter to her sister. Commissioned by ZSL and curated by Contemporary Art Society *Consultancy, the work was developed over two years with community workshops. Linder, known for feminist photomontages, compared the mosaic's assembly to her collage practice. The unveiling is part of ZSL's bicentenary programme.
