Lidia Lisbôa and Thiago Barbalho: Hand in Hand at Elizabeth Xi Bauer

exhibition · 2026-07-23

Elizabeth Xi Bauer presents 'Hand in Hand', an exhibition of new works by Brazilian artists Lidia Lisbôa and Thiago Barbalho, curated by Maria do Carmo M. P. de Pontes. Running from 26 June to 9 August 2026 at 20–22 Exmouth Market, London, the show features ceramics, textiles, drawings, and sculptures that foreground handmade processes as rigorous contemporary art. Lisbôa's practice spans ceramics, textiles, sculpture, crochet, drawing, and performance; for this exhibition she presents new ceramics, textiles, and works on paper developed during a residency at Elizabeth Xi Bauer's Deptford studio. Barbalho works with colored pencil, graphite, spray, oil, oil pastel, and marker on paper, creating intricate compositions that explore drawing as a sign of presence. He has created new large-scale drawings and a sculptural series of hands holding one another. The exhibition highlights affinities between the artists' working methods, including shared experiences of migration and class constraints. Formal correspondences emerge between Barbalho's dune drawings and Lisbôa's knotted fabric works from her 'Teta' series and ceramic termite mounds from 'Cupinzeiros' (1996–2024). The title 'Hand in Hand' references both the material language and the artists' relationship.
