Les Innombrables' Sculptural Intervention at Art Basel 2026

During Art Basel 2026, the Swiss art collective Les Innombrables installed a sculptural intervention titled 'Very Welcome' on Messeplatz in Basel. The work consists of monumental conical forms covered in taut, reflective fabric, resembling oversized traffic cones or shrouded objects. By appropriating the vernacular of temporary urban furniture—traffic cones and protective covers—the collective performs a détournement, elevating industrial objects into minimalist sculptures. The silvery-gray drapery evokes the wrapped works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude but with a cooler, more unsettling quality, referencing the psychoanalytic concept of objet petit a. Positioned across the plaza, the cones disrupt pedestrian flow, creating a choreography of avoidance and attraction. The intervention comments on boundaries between public and private space, the ephemeral art fair and the enduring city, and the veiled commodities of the art market. Les Innombrables have been known since the 1990s for seizing found realities in art-fair contexts, with past works at Frieze LA 2019, Art Basel Miami, and the Venice Biennale.
