Leonardo Garza's Matter / Memory Brings BYREDO Scents to Mexico City Through Steel and Glass

Matter / Memory, an interactive spatial installation by Mexican designer Leonardo Garza, was commissioned by BYREDO for its official launch in Mexico. This installation transforms five distinct fragrances into tactile materials, movement, reflections, and soundscapes. Constructed from five curved segments, each piece features a unique material composition beneath a clear surface. A curtain made of thousands of stainless steel spheres allows visitors to reveal the materials underneath by shifting the spheres, creating a delicate metallic sound. Each fragrance corresponds to a raw medium: Gypsy Water as charcoal and ash, Rose of No Man's Land as fractured glass, Mojave Ghost as mineral dust, Bal d'Afrique as red ochre earth, and Blanche as folded white textile. Enveloped in a low fog, the work creates an atmospheric landscape where light and materials continuously evolve. This project explores the relationship between art and design, showcasing Garza's ongoing interest in spatial installations. The installation was curated by Artsynonym and photographed by Noldo, located in Mexico City.
