Leilah Babirye Imagines Queer Wedding at ICA Boston

Leilah Babirye’s exhibition, 'Embaga ya Naki ne Naki (Wedding of Naki and Naki),' at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, turns the gallery into a vibrant space for a queer wedding. The showcase features fresh ceramic sculptures of brides, grooms, and guests, alongside impressive wooden carvings of ancestors. Babirye cleverly repurposes materials like bicycle parts, inner tubes, and reclaimed wood to create pieces that symbolize dignity from discarded items. Originally from Uganda, where she faced persecution for her sexuality, she now lives in New York, using her art to confront the histories of exclusion while celebrating LGBTQ+ strength. The exhibition is open from August 27, 2026, to January 18, 2027, at the Fotene Demoulas Gallery.
