LEDDY MAYTUM STACY Architects completes net-zero California Street Campus for San Francisco University High School

LEDDY MAYTUM STACY Architects (LMSA) designed a new 48,000-square-foot building for San Francisco University High School, completed in summer 2025. The three-story California Street Campus replaced a 1940s strip mall in the Pacific Heights neighborhood, addressing the school's need for expanded facilities due to growing enrollment. Sustainability was prioritized with a net-zero energy target and LEED Platinum certification, featuring a 200-kilowatt solar array that doubles as shading awnings. The project centralizes STEM programming previously scattered across four other buildings, placing classrooms on the top floor for natural daylight. A cistern collects and reuses rainwater, while IN SITU designed landscape elements that green the streetscape and courtyards. Truebeck Construction served as contractor for the project. The ground floor houses the Bessolo Family Pavilion, a 10,500-square-foot gymnasium with double-height ceilings that can seat 600 spectators for collegiate-level competitions. This multipurpose space also hosts spirit rallies and convocation events. Cement planters create barriers between the building and the street at ground level. Interim Head of School Nasif Iskander described the campus as reflecting the institution's values through physical design aligned with academic vision. The building adds density to an underutilized urban site while providing a public face along a transit-rich street.
