Le Bruit du Bois: 1,000 Timber Chimes Turn Alpine Pavilion into Playable Instrument at Festival des Cabanes
The 2026 Festival des Cabanes competition was won by four students from ENSA Montpellier: Antoine Aunave, Flora Peyrot, Mathilde Steenhaut, and Luc Loviton. Their creation, Le Bruit du Bois, is a timber pavilion measuring fifteen square meters, located in the French Alps. Chosen from almost 200 submissions, this installation was constructed on-site for the festival's eleventh iteration, which showcased fourteen temporary structures near the Sources du Lac d'Annecy. The design features a four-centimeter timber batten and nearly 1,000 suspended wooden chimes, resembling a giant xylophone. Positioned on an elevated walkway at Les Combes de Seythenex, the pavilion provides mountain vistas and engages with sound and weather, reflecting the festival's theme of listening as well as observing.
