Photographer Lauren Maccabee documented two sisters, Connie and Elsie, in Dorset, UK, who practice falconry—rearing, flying, and caring for birds of prey. Inspired by Ken Loach's film 'Kes,' Maccabee sought to find female falconers subverting a traditionally male practice. The girls, taught by their father, primarily house rescues, breed critically endangered species, and participate in re-release projects. Maccabee captured the day-to-day needs of bird care, including leatherwork for gloves and leashes. She was struck by the girls' deep understanding of the birds' moods. Notably, the sisters do not use social media, finding fulfillment in their dedication to the birds. The project reminded Maccabee of the importance of personal work in an era of AI and financial instability.
