Lake Flato Renovates Its First Commission, La Barroneña Ranch House in Texas

Ted Flato, one of the co-founders of the San Antonio-based architecture firm Lake Flato, has revisited his first major project, the La Barroneña ranch house in Texas, which he originally designed back in 1985. The renovation, completed in 2024, was undertaken for Ed and Ellie Lasater, who have owned the property since 2012. The goal was to enhance the home while preserving its original essence. Vicki Yuan and Pamela Dailey from Lake Flato led the updates, which included new stone countertops, zellige tile backsplashes, and turning a closet into a cozy dining nook. Located on 6,000 acres near Laredo, Texas, this house has been in Ed Lasater's family for 120 years, reflecting a commitment to sustainable and regionally inspired design. The Lasaters also added a pool, a pickleball court, and the Porch House, increasing their sleeping capacity from 8 to 14.
