LACMA Show Features Hokusai's Great Wave with Rare Collector's Seal

exhibition · 2026-09-22

An exceptional print of Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa (circa 1830–31) is currently displayed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) within the David Geffen Galleries, as part of the exhibit Living Landscapes, Flowing Waters. This print bears a red seal inscribed with "Wakai Oyaji," belonging to Tokyo collector Wakai Kenzaburō, who was prominent in the 1870s. LACMA's research library possesses the original catalogue from the 1883 exhibition L'Exposition Retrospective de l'Art Japonais in Paris, curated by Louis Gonse, which mentions Wakai alongside a ninth-century artwork by Kose no Kanaoka. Gonse's L'Art Japonais highlights Wakai's status as a prominent connoisseur. The exhibition also showcases pieces by Terasaki Kōgyō and Kamisaka Sekka.
