LACMA Retrospective 'Textile Alchemy' Celebrates Reiko Sudō's Four-Decade Textile Practice

exhibition · 2026-09-15

Since May, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), designed by Peter Zumthor, has utilized semi-transparent chrome-coated curtains by Reiko Sudō to protect light-sensitive artworks while offering sweeping views of Downtown LA. A retrospective titled 'Textile Alchemy: The Art of Reiko Sudō and Nuno' will open on September 20, showcasing nearly 40 years of Sudō's career. Born in 1953 in Ishioka, Japan, she co-founded the Tokyo-based textile studio Nuno in 1984, focusing on sustainability and merging traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. Organized by Sharon Takeda, the exhibition will recreate the original Nuno shop and feature an array of textile creations. Sudō has also collaborated with Muji since 2016 and authored four books on Japanese textiles.
