L-shaped roofs create 'generous shadows' over Los Cabos residence

Casa en Palmilla, a hilltop residence in Los Cabos, Mexico, by Estudio Ignacio Urquiza Ana Paula de Alba, features four volumes arranged around a trapezoidal courtyard. Two L-shaped roofs of laminated oak with clay tiles span the volumes, with 2.1-metre-deep overhangs providing shade and thermal performance. The volumes house service areas, three guest suites, a main suite with walk-in closets and study, and a living-dining-kitchen space that opens via 12-metre glazed panels to connect courtyard and pool terrace. The design captures views, promotes cross ventilation, and uses a sandy palette inside and out, with furniture by Alejandra Usobiaga. The firm also completed a quartet of houses in Valle de Bravo and had its restaurant Rubra longlisted for Dezeen Awards 2025.
