KWCA's Azenya Villas: Four Compact Holiday Retreats on a Nuwara Eliya Hillside
KWCA – Kosala Weerasekara Chartered Architects has completed Azenya Villas, a cluster of four compact holiday retreats on a steep hillside in Nuwara Eliya, in Sri Lanka's central highlands. The 5,000 ft² project, designed during the country's economic crisis, was guided by a central idea: keep construction costs to a minimum without compromising the experience of the place. The response was a simple volume with a gabled roof and a reduced footprint that extends vertically rather than spreading across the terrain, and that is replicated to give the ensemble a clear identity. The retreats are surrounded by cultivated terraces and montane forest. The project is dated 2025, and MAD Factory Studios is credited for the photography. Miwa Negoro curated the presentation.
