Kunsthalle München Explores Catalan Modernisme from Gaudí to Picasso

The Kunsthalle München presents a major survey of Catalan Modernisme, spanning 1880 to 1914, through 160 works including paintings, drawings, furniture, ceramics, and architectural models. In 1900 Barcelona was a city of perpetual construction, and a nineteen-year-old Pablo Picasso began signing his canvases with his mother's surname. The exhibition traces this transformative period when the city forged a distinct cultural identity. It features Antoni Gaudí's mosaic shard techniques alongside architects Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch. A generation of painters largely unknown in France is also highlighted: Hermen Anglada Camarasa and his phosphorescent nocturnes, Ramon Casas, Isidre Nonell, Santiago Rusiñol, and Joaquim Mir. Many of these pieces leave Spain for the first time. Following its Munich run, the exhibition will travel to the Museum Barberini in Potsdam in spring 2027. The show runs from 23 October 2026 to 21 February 2027 at the Kunsthalle München in Munich, Germany.
