Kubota & Bachmann Architects Transforms 1890 Amsterdam Townhouse with Light-Filled Design
Kubota & Bachmann Architects has transformed a traditional townhouse from 1890 in Amsterdam into a bright, dual-level apartment occupying the ground and first floors. This residence showcases a classic transversal design and features a private inner courtyard. To enhance natural light in the ground-floor living space, the design incorporates a white color scheme, natural wood flooring, custom shelving, and sleek cabinetry. Courtyard windows are mirrored to create the illusion of larger openings, while two large light boxes function as artificial skylights. On the upper level, three bedrooms and a master bathroom are present, with ribbed glass partitions replacing structural walls to allow daylight while ensuring privacy. The renovation, titled 'A Light-Filled Renovation', was spearheaded by architect Toshihiro Kubota.
