Kuba Święcicki weaves VHS tapes into tapestry of collective memory

Kuba Święcicki, a talented artist from Poland, transforms forgotten VHS tapes and cassette recordings into detailed woven artworks that explore ideas of memory and the idea of things becoming outdated. His piece, 'Stories Seen and Heard' (2025), was showcased at the Visteria Foundation's Craft Days. This artwork is a striking black tapestry made solely from magnetic tape, with woven strips creating a reflective effect. Święcicki gathered tapes from his own collection, as well as from friends and family, integrating clips from TV, home videos, and radio. Another work, 'Heard Stories' (2026), focuses on sound using cassette recordings. His earlier installation, 'Woven Stories' (2023), was featured at the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź and KODE Lysverket in Bergen, curated by Marta Lisok. Through his unique approach, combining fiber art with techniques like embroidery and weaving, he reimagines analog technology into physical forms.
