Kröller-Müller Museum Displays All 88 Van Goghs for First Time Since 2003

exhibition · 2026-09-18

The Kröller-Müller Museum located in Otterlo, Netherlands, is presenting an exhibition titled Van Gogh, All Our Paintings, featuring all 88 paintings by Van Gogh until 3 January 2027. This marks the first complete display of the collection since 2003, as only about half is usually exhibited. The show is organized into themes of faith, hope, and love, showcasing works from 1881 to 1890, including notable pieces such as The Potato Eaters study and Falling Leaves. A still life with an envelope from Theo, associated with Van Gogh's self-mutilation, is also included. Following the exhibition, 29 artworks will travel to Japan in February 2027, alongside a planned €125m building project from 2027 to 2030.

  • The exhibition Van Gogh, All Our Paintings runs until 3 January 2027 and is curated by Renske Cohen Tervaert.
  • The show is divided into three sections inspired by faith, hope, and love, and mixes works from Van Gogh's 1881–90 career rather than presenting them chronologically.
  • The concept derives from Van Gogh's only known sermon, delivered on 29 October 1876 at Richmond Methodist Church when he was 23.
  • Highlights include a large study for The Potato Eaters (1885), Four Sunflowers Gone to Seed (1887), Pink Peach Trees (1888), Terrace of a Café at Night (1888), and Country Road in Provence by Night (1890).
  • Falling Leaves (Les Alyscamps) (1888), not displayed for over 20 years due to fragility, is included and will go to conservation after the show.
  • Still life with a Plate of Onions (1889) includes an envelope from Theo van Gogh, believed to have carried news of his engagement to Jo Bonger on 23 December 1888.
  • The museum's frames are replicas of early Art Deco designs by Jacob van den Bosch from around 1910, chosen by Helene Kröller-Müller and reinstated in 2003.
  • After the exhibition, 29 works from 1888–90 will tour Japan as The Grand Van Gogh Exhibition at Kobe City Museum, Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art, and Tokyo's Ueno Royal Museum between 2027 and 2028.
  • The Kröller-Müller Museum will partly close from September 2027 until around 2030 for a €125m building project; director Benno Tempel plans special Van Gogh exhibitions with outside loans after reopening.
