Kren. Transforms Reclaimed Greenhouse into Glowing Festival Shelter for Loud Places
London and Vienna-based design studio Kren. has created Shed, a bespoke installation for the independent music festival Loud Places, located a couple of hours outside London. The project reworks a reclaimed greenhouse structure into an inhabitable light installation that serves as both a beacon and an intimate gathering space. During the day, the yellow frame and diffuse screens act as foregrounds and backgrounds; at night, modified industrial lights suspended just below seated eye-level along the roof ridge cause the translucent TPU envelope to become back-lit, turning the entire structure into a diffuse screen. Silhouettes of occupants animate the walls while light projects outward toward the festival. PVC curtains, traditionally used in industrial cooling systems and hung by cable ties, demarcate the entry. The design team includes Ivy Aris, John Clayson, and Andrei Dinu. The work references Derek Jarman's greenhouse bed in his 1980s Bankside loft, exploring the greenhouse archetype as a place of intimacy and a space-within-a-space. By removing the thermal envelope of the glass, Kren. focuses on the greenhouse's rudimentary structural qualities rather than its thermal performance. The project reflects the studio's interest in the transformable potential of everyday objects and responds to resource austerity with an optimistic, DIY approach emblematic of music festival and club culture. Shed stands in the festival's meadow area, offering shelter within the expanse.
