Kit Harington, renowned for portraying Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, has been announced as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO's forthcoming Harry Potter television adaptation, taking over from Nicholas Hoult, who exited due to scheduling issues. This news was revealed on 24 August 2026, with HBO issuing a statement to confirm the update. Harington, who lent his voice to Lockhart in an audiobook, shared his enthusiasm, describing the character as 'a wonderful creation.' The series, inspired by J.K. Rowling's novels, will debut its first season featuring Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on HBO Max this Christmas. The second season will adapt The Chamber of Secrets, where Lockhart plays a significant role. The cast also includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Mark Mylod, who collaborated with Harington on Game of Thrones, serves as executive producer alongside Rowling. Harington's role marks his third series with HBO, following Game of Thrones and Industry. The show is projected to last 10 years, encompassing all seven books.
