Kisu Tempura Restaurant Reconstructs Kyoto's Architectural Language in Hangzhou

Kisu, a tempura restaurant in Hangzhou, China, has been completed by Uchida Shanghai under the direction of architect Mitsuhiro Shoji. This establishment offers a modern interpretation of Kyoto's Sukiya architectural style, utilizing local materials and craftsmanship such as weathered stone and reclaimed antique stone to establish a minimalist dining atmosphere. The exterior showcases asymmetrical openings that regulate natural light, complemented by a prominent yakisugi-clad entrance door. Inside, an L-shaped counter made of Japanese cypress serves as the centerpiece beneath a segmented bamboo ceiling. Full-height lattice screens connect private dining rooms, while custom tableware from Jingdezhen enhances the architectural theme. Qingyan Zhu's photography captures the essence of the space.
