Kenny Scharf: Nature, Ecology, and Cosmic Vision at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza

exhibition · 2026-09-29

From September 29, 2026, to January 17, 2027, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid will host a solo exhibition featuring Kenny Scharf (Los Angeles, 1958), curated by Guillermo Solana. This exhibition reframes Scharf as both a painter focused on nature and an advocate for ecological issues. It is divided into four sections: 'Paisajes' discusses deforestation in the Amazon and wildfires in California; 'El árbol como chamán' presents a cosmic tree; 'Visiones cósmicas' critiques the competition among billionaires for space exploration; and 'Un coro de voces' highlights emotive forms. Scharf attributes his environmental awareness to childhood experiences with air pollution. In an Observer interview on November 8, 2024, he discusses the detrimental effects of consumerism on the planet and promotes a message of hope amid devastation.
