Kengo Kuma's 'Earth / Tree' Installation at Copenhagen Contemporary

Kengo Kuma and his team have created a monumental site-specific installation titled 'Earth / Tree' at Copenhagen Contemporary. The work explores the Japanese concept of komorebi, capturing the interplay of light and shadow as sunlight filters through trees. A suspended canopy of wooden slats, curved with a central opening, floats above a brick platform and rubble pile. These organic materials bridge Nordic and Japanese cultural values of craftsmanship and landscape continuity. The installation exemplifies Kuma's focus on 'soft architecture,' which integrates with environments and human engagement. Recently awarded the bid to design the new National Gallery in London, Kuma presents this work in Denmark through February 21, 2027.
