Ken Coles AM's Legacy at Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation

Ken Coles AM, who passed away on January 18, 2022, served as a Trustee of the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation from 1991 to 2015 and chaired the organization from 1994 to 2012. Under his leadership, the foundation significantly expanded its fundraising efforts and transformed the Australian Museum's Lizard Island Research Station. Key initiatives included establishing annual donor programs, launching fundraising events like dinners and lunches, and overseeing major construction projects such as staff housing and facility upgrades during the station's 30th anniversary development. Coles also helped create post-doctoral fellowship programs and introduced a Life Member category for major donors. His contributions were recognized with honors including an honorary degree from the University of Sydney in 1999 and appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2000.
