Keiji Ashizawa transforms former Tokyo hostel into eight-suite boutique hotel

Keiji Ashizawa Design has converted a former hostel in Tokyo's Shintomicho district into the Tomi Hotel Ginza, a boutique hotel with one suite per floor. The 750-square-metre, ten-storey building near Tokyo and Ginza stations now houses eight self-contained suites, each with a living area, two bedrooms, kitchen, and laundry; the top floor penthouse has a larger living room and one bedroom. The ground floor hosts a Dotcom coffee cafe open to the public. Oak wood dominates the interiors, used for walls, floors, and furniture. Some bedrooms feature shoji screens with oak-lattice frames and washi paper. The hotel aims to accommodate families and groups, filling a gap in Tokyo's market. Ashizawa collaborated with design studio 6D on branding, which influenced perforated metal lamps. Furniture comes from Karimoku, Ishinomaki Laboratory, and Ariake, with custom pieces.
