Keiji Ashizawa Designs Basao Tea Flagship in Shanghai's Rockbund District

architecture-design · 2026-10-23

Keiji Ashizawa looked to both the traditional architecture surrounding Shanghai's Rockbund area and David Chipperfield Architects' restoration of the district when conceiving the flagship store for Chinese tea brand Basao. The shop pairs a retail space with a cafe section where customers can drink the tea. Basao's outpost occupies a site within Rockbund, a zone defined by historic buildings and shaped in part by the David Chipperfield Architects restoration project. Photographs of the completed interior and exterior accompany the project's release.
