Keiji Ashizawa Design Unveils Charred Cedar House in Yatsugatake

architecture-design · 2026-09-11

Keiji Ashizawa Design has finalized the House in Yatsugatake, a 225-square-metre vacation residence situated on Japan's Yatsugatake mountain plateau. This single-storey home showcases an angular, folded design wrapped in yakisugi, which is allowed due to its placement outside of fire-regulated zones. Intended for family gatherings, the layout features a central entrance that separates the western wing, containing living spaces and a guest room, from the eastern wing, which includes private bedrooms. The interior is adorned with oak, and sloping beams along with roof-level windows provide views of the garden. A skylight brightens the living area, while bathroom windows overlook the forest. The structure is built on a concrete base to withstand winter snowfall. The project credits include architects Keiji Ashizawa and Kenji Kawami, structural engineer AS Associates, and construction by Tanaka Jyuuken Co Ltd, with photography by Tomooki Kengaku.
