KEBAG Enova Waste-to-Energy Plant by Penzel Valier Completed in 2025

architecture-design · 2026-09-14

Penzel Valier has completed the KEBAG Enova waste-to-energy plant, a 44,000-square-meter industrial facility in Switzerland. The project, finished in 2025, was documented by photographer Bruno Augsburger and curated by Nina Vuga. The design team was led by Christian Penzel, Friedrich Tellbüscher, Leonore Daum, and Martin Valier, with Johannes Süssbier as lead architect. Project management was handled by TBF + Partner, structural engineering by AFRY Switzerland, and photovoltaic engineering by Sundesign. The building's spatial form is based on two fundamental design principles. Instead of reinforcing the delivery and process bunkers—which include both existing and new ribbed structures—by extending them vertically and continuing the new construction as originally planned, the architects sought to avoid resulting heterogeneity. Their goal was to develop a cohesive, powerful overall form that seamlessly integrates the different infrastructure components. The project falls under the category of Industrial Architecture. The original article was published in Spanish on ArchDaily, with a link to the English version.
