Kayla Mahaffey's 2019 Solo Show Marked Artistic Breakthrough Merging Realism with Animation

Chicago-based artist Kayla Mahaffey reached a pivotal moment in 2019 with her solo exhibition Off to the Races at Line Dot Editions. The series featured children in motion, their emotional range captured through detailed portraiture blended with flat, cartoon-inspired elements. Mahaffey describes this as the first successful fusion of illustration and fine art, aiming to convey resilience and victory. Her work draws from diverse influences including Dr. Seuss, vintage Disney, Scooby-Doo, The Jetsons, and Hellboy, alongside Golden Age cartoons, classic anime, and eight-bit video games. While earlier focused on fantasy subjects like mermaids, she shifted to acrylics and pop art, with children serving as metaphors for inner youth rather than literal subjects. A 2020 piece, Silence Must Be Heard, responded to Black Lives Matter, while another encouraged voting for the When We All Vote campaign. Mahaffey often works rapidly, sometimes completing a painting daily, and balances life models with imagined faces. Her technical process involves meticulous layering, especially for flat elements like white gloves requiring multiple coats. She is preparing a 2021 solo show at Thinkspace in Los Angeles, her second there in two years. The artist studied at Chicago's American Academy of Art, initially torn between illustration and fine art disciplines.
