Kathrin Marchenko Translates Monet's Water Lilies Into Monumental Tulle Embroidery
Textile artist Kathrin Marchenko has produced a piece titled Beyond the Bridge, measuring 110 × 280 centimeters (3.6 x 9.2 feet). This embroidery on framed tulle is inspired by Claude Monet's Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies. The artwork showcases water lilies under an arched pathway, crafted from wool and mohair threads in shades of blue, green, turquoise, violet, and warm highlights. Marchenko shared with My Modern Met that she was captivated by the fibers' softness and dimensionality, which reflect light uniquely, creating an atmospheric and painterly effect. Instead of replicating Monet's work precisely, she aimed to capture its essence of light, movement, and reflection while allowing the threads to establish a distinct visual language. This piece follows her earlier Monet-inspired creation, Nymphéas Beyond. My Modern Met has permitted the use of photos by Kathrin Marchenko.
