Katherine Hubbard Photographs Her Mother's Dementia in 'The Great Room' at Studio Voltaire

exhibition · 2026-06-12

In 2020, Katherine Hubbard started capturing images of her mother, Antonette Berger, after noticing troubling signs. Diagnosed with LATE (limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy), Berger resided alone in Philadelphia. To provide care, Hubbard moved in and set up two vintage Polaroid cameras in Berger's Germantown apartment over five years. The photographic series, titled The Great Room, reflects Berger's own words about the space and is featured in the book, One Fifty One. Hubbard's solo exhibition is currently on display at Studio Voltaire in London, running from 7 October to 10 January 2027. Additionally, Hubbard produced nude body prints with Berger, focusing on consent and mutual respect, which helped both women emotionally.
