Katharina Sieverding's Life-Death at Galerie Thomas Schulte for Berlin Art Week 2026

During Berlin Art Week 2026, Galerie Thomas Schulte will showcase Katharina Sieverding's exhibition titled Life–Death. This display focuses on her 1969 film of the same name, featuring large-format stills from the film. Created in West Berlin, this work captures an early stage of Sieverding's artistic journey amidst significant political, social, and aesthetic transformations. Life–Death was first presented at documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972, underscoring its significance in art history. Shot on 16mm film, it holds a distinctive position within Sieverding's body of work. At that time, she was studying under Joseph Beuys at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, experiencing the institutional turmoil and protests of the late 1960s, shortly after the academy's temporary closure.
