Karl Monies’ luminous fungi lamps at Other Circle during 3daysofdesign

During 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen, Other Circle presented Karl Monies’ mushroom-like lamps, which appeared to grow from moss and lichen beds in metal trays. The Danish artist and designer’s practice spans ceramics, furniture, painting, and jewelry, with the lamps originating from his Bonum Lumen series first shown in his 2024 solo exhibition Macro at Etage Projects. The pieces feature faceted metal sheets with visible rivets, seams, and oxidized blues and browns, blending craft with landscape. Monies’ earlier Arcana series at Etage Projects in 2019 drew on magic and tarot, while his ceramic vessels combine glazed stoneware with cork and rope, referencing diverse eras and cultures. His work treats tradition as mutable, allowing objects to carry traces of the past while remaining open to new meanings.
