Kara Chin and Romain Sarrot Explore Gooning Subculture at Hatch Gallery, Paris

Hatch Gallery in Paris presents 'Pity Petty,' a duo exhibition by Kara Chin and Romain Sarrot that uses the grotesque and the cute to critically examine the internet subculture of gooning—a Gen Z–dominated, pornography-obsessed masturbatory practice described in a November 2025 Harper's Magazine article by Daniel Kolitz. The show does not replicate gooncaves but treats them as liminal spaces between digital and corporeal, lonely and communal. Chin's ceramic sculptures, such as 'The Goone State,' depict flattened, fleshy faces evoking exhaustion and shame, while her wall piece 'The Nhilistic Penguin Water Font' cites lolcat memes from 4chan. Sarrot's installation 'Dog, Doggie, Dodger' features three bas-reliefs of dogs running toward a grapevine, activated by a trigger in a confessional-like setup, suggesting an escape from digital immersion. The exhibition draws on the historical grotesque of Nero's Domus Aurea and references theorists Mark Fisher and Sianne Ngai. Chin (b. 1994, Singapore) holds a BA from Slade School of Fine Art and has shown at Liverpool Biennial and Goldsmiths CCA. Sarrot (b. 1986, Paris) has exhibited at Material Art Fair Mexico City and Art and History Museum Geneva. The show runs at Hatch Gallery, Paris.
