Kanye West's Russia Concerts Canceled as Gazprom Arena Denies Contract

Kanye West's planned concerts in St. Petersburg, Russia, scheduled for October 10 and 11, have been canceled after the Gazprom Arena denied signing any contract for the venue. The concerts, which had sold out with over 100,000 tickets, were announced last week and would have been the first by a major Western artist since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The arena's management stated that no agreement was signed and that the concerts could not take place there. This contradicts earlier promotions on the arena's social media, which had hailed West as 'the most influential artist of our time.' A Russian government source told the independent St. Petersburg outlet Rotonda that the events were not approved by 'high-ranking Russian officials.' Two other sources told the Russian site Fontanka that the concerts lacked authorization from all competent authorities and were canceled after 'a call from Moscow.' West, who has been attempting to rehabilitate his image after years of racist, xenophobic, sexist, and conspiracy-laden statements, released his twelfth studio album 'Bully' in April to poor critical reception. His European tour has been troubled, with cancellations in Switzerland, Poland, England, and France. On July 18, he was scheduled to perform at the Hellwatt Festival in Reggio Emilia, Italy, but that festival was also canceled after weeks of contradictory announcements and controversies.
