Kansas City's Rock Island Bridge Reopens as Entertainment District
Multistudio has revitalized the 121-year-old Rock Island Bridge spanning the Kansas River, transforming it into an entertainment district set to reopen this spring after lying dormant since the 1970s. This bridge, which links Kansas City, Missouri, to Kansas City, Kansas, is the first of its kind on a river bridge, reminiscent of New York's High Line. Constructed in 1905, the bridge's steel remains intact due to minimal vehicle use. The $20 million redevelopment features a 35,000-square-foot event space named American Royal Hall, along with various dining establishments. To comply with levee regulations, the bridge was elevated by 4 feet. The Unified Government of Wyandotte County acquired it for $1 in 2022, anticipating 500,000 to 700,000 visitors each year.
