Julio Le Parc, Kinetic Art Pioneer and Political Dissident, Dies at 97

Julio Le Parc, the Franco-Argentine artist known for kinetic and Op art, died in Paris on May 30 at age 97. His death came days before a major retrospective at Tate Modern in London, opening June 11. Le Parc was the last surviving founding member of Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV), co-founded in 1960 with François Morellet and Francisco Sobrino. He rejected the cult of the solitary genius, signing works collectively and producing anonymous posters during the May 1968 protests. In 1968, he was arrested at the Renault factory in Flins and expelled from France, but allowed to return after a campaign by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. He organized the Contrabienal in 1971 to boycott the São Paulo Biennial against the Brazilian dictatorship. In 1972, he famously canceled a solo retrospective at Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris after a coin toss. His work used mirrors, motorized light boxes, and interactive devices to engage viewers physically. Later series like La Tortura (1972) used comic strips to depict state repression. His recent U.S. retrospectives include Pérez Art Museum Miami (2016) and Metropolitan Museum of Art (2018). His son Yamil Le Parc noted his father's rebellious spirit is needed today. Curator Val Ravaglia of Tate Modern called him a true original whose ideas on viewer participation were ahead of their time.
