Julie Béna and Mark Ther Stage 'Le Chat Noir' at Prague's Historic Parnas

exhibition · 2026-10-07

Julie Béna and Mark Ther unveil Le Chat Noir, a site-specific exhibition at the historic Parnas in Prague. This venue, known for its bohemian gatherings, FAMU filmmakers, and jazz scenes, integrates into the installation itself. A collaborative collage of drawings by the artists welcomes attendees, exploring themes like performed roles, queer identity, and memory of place. Béna's artwork, influenced by theatre, literature, and popular culture, critiques female representation and gender dynamics with a touch of poetic irony. Ther's work, encompassing drawing, video, and installation, delves into queer identity and the overlooked history of Central Europe, including the Sudeten Germans. For this exhibition, he presents new large-format canvas drawings in Parnas's main hall, while Béna showcases new glass lamp objects that enhance the atmosphere and reflect Parnas's social narrative. A monumental Jester figure, inspired by historical French automata, highlights Béna's fascination with theatricality. Young performers, encouraged by Ther, animate the space by interacting with the tables, fostering social connections. This exhibition was part of the fifth PRAGUE ART WEEK 26, which took place from September 24–27, 2026, featuring 100 events from forty prominent Prague art institutions.
