Julián Kreimer's 'Yuyo' Exhibition at Sarah Lawrence College Explores Family, Diaspora, and Labor

Julián Kreimer's exhibition 'Yuyo' was on view at Sarah Lawrence College's Heimbold Center for Visual Art from April 2 to May 8, 2026. The show included paintings, drawings, and a video animation that weave together personal and political histories. In a conversation with artist Kerry Downey, Kreimer discussed the title 'Yuyo,' a Spanish word for 'weed' and his family nickname, which also connects to Argentine painter Luís Felipe Noé. Kreimer's work incorporates his parents' archives: his mother was an architect and urban planner who worked on disaster relief for the World Bank, and his father was a human rights lawyer. The video animation uses slides from their careers, including documentation of the 1979 Mexico City earthquake. Kreimer also created a drawing on 54 sheets of his father's letterhead, exploring themes of inheritance and non-inheritance. The exhibition was curated by Vera Iliatova. Kreimer is chair of the MFA Program at Purchase College SUNY and has been reviewed in Art in America and Hyperallergic.
