Juan Valdez 1959: Colombian Coffee as Immersive Architecture

architecture-design · 2026-07-01

In Bogotá, the Juan Valdez 1959 flagship store by CREARQ transforms Colombian coffee culture into a spatial experience across three floors. The first level evokes the mountain origin with organic textures and filtered light; the second honors artisanal craft through wood, fibers, and tactile surfaces; the third celebrates coffee as a ritual of encounter and hospitality. The material palette references the coffee cycle: foliage greens, earthy browns, cherry tones, warm beige, and roasted grain hues. The project asks what it means to inhabit a brand built on coffee imaginaries, answering with a sensory architecture that makes visible the culture, landscape, and collective memory behind each cup. This feature appears in Glocal Design Magazine's 89th edition, 'Visionarias del espacio,' which profiles 15 women architects and interior designers in Mexico, with covers by Prince Láuder and Jimena Estíbaliz.
