Ju Young Kim Transforms Airplane Parts into Art at P21 Seoul

Ju Young Kim's exhibition 'Holding Room' at P21 in Seoul (21 March – 24 April) repurposes commercial airline components into art objects. The show includes a seatback tray-table turned into a table (In the morning I wish you a good night, 2026), aircraft wing flaps with stained-glass panels (The skin remembers the air, 2026), and a passenger service unit with an art-nouveau light fitting (Under the reading light 10C and D, 2026). A series of works on glass, Cabin Temperature (2025–26), features photographs of airline details like emergency instructions and butter pads. The gallery is carpeted in corporate blue with a logo for 'Aeroplastics', an invented corporation. The works provoke a Kantian enquiry about 'purposiveness without purpose' from the Critique of Judgment (1790). The artist explores how objects hold memory and the in-betweenness of air travel.
