JPG Print Shop Transforms Soviet Factory in Tbilisi with Plywood and Steel
In Tbilisi, Georgia, the JPG Print Shop has opened inside Fabrika, a former Soviet industrial complex, in a design by Sandro Kvirikadze Design Studio. The interior introduces plywood structures, stainless steel, and retro-futurist forms, creating a dialogue between the building's industrial past and contemporary creative culture. The space serves as a print shop where visitors can customize garments on-site, alongside collaborative T-shirts by graphic designers. The design preserves traces of the original architecture at the entrance, gradually transitioning into rigid geometric plywood structures. Warm plywood contrasts with cool stainless steel, and structural elements double as shelving and hanging systems. A central feature is a nearly three-meter-tall mirror with three movable panels that, when closed, align with the wooden structure opposite, and when opened, alter the spatial composition. The design follows principles of Light Weight Architecture and retro-futurism, reinterpreting historical forms with contemporary materials. The project, photographed by Grigory Sokolinsky, was submitted to designboom via its DIY submissions feature and edited by Christina Vergopoulou.
